Did you ever give thought to wherever there is bird seed, there are birds--no, I mean squirrels! Here are some squirrel proof bird feeder ideas to deter squirrels from stealing all of the bird seed.
The first tip to a squirrel proof bird feeder is
being aware of the placement of the feeder. It is important to set
your bird feeder away from objects because the acrobatic squirrel has
incredible jumping and leaping skills.
If you want to hang your squirrel proof bird feeder
be sure to suspend it from a wire. Squirrels will quickly chew through
a cord or rope. Remember to string plastic pop bottles, LP records or
pieces of PVC tubing along the wire to keep the squirrel from running
across the wire to the squirrel proof bird feeder.
Another idea to a squirrel proof bird feeder is to install a squirrel proof bird feeder
baffle above your bird feeder if you are having a problem with
squirrels jumping on the feeder. The slippery surface of the baffle
will slide the squirrel straight to the ground. If you have problems
with squirrels climbing up to your bird feeder then an inverted baffle
on the bottom of the feeder will usually eliminate that climb.
Another great idea is to use a piece of PVC pipe
for your pole to mount the feeder on. This pipe does not give them
anything to sink their claws into.
The approach that many bird watchers use is to buy
a squirrel proof bird feeder from your local garden shop. They carry
many different styles. One type spins and flips, one type closes the
feeder tube door and another is so long that the cute little rodents
will fall to the ground before they reach the food. The Yankee Flipper
is a well-known brand of squirrel proof bird feeder that has a perch
that will spin and flip the squirrel off (unharmed). A weight
activated feeder is another effective squirrel proof bird feeder. The
squirrel's weight will close the feeder door not allowing the squirrel
to get to the seeds. A feeder with a long tube makes it difficult for
the squirrel to reach down from above to get the seeds.
And, if none of these ideas catch your fancy you could always set-up a feeder away from your squirrel proof bird feeder just for the squirrels. Fill it with their favorite seeds and nuts so they will leave your squirrel proof bird feeder for the birds.
